Among these monthly dates, some popular and important Amavasya dates are Mauni Amavasya, Shani Jayanti and Vat Savitri fast, Bhaumavati Amavasya, Kartik Amavasya i.e. Diwali, Hariyali Amavasya, Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarvpritri Amavasya. Diwali, India's most popular and twinkling festival, falls on the Amavasya of Kartik month.

Amavasya is considered in Hindu texts as an important day dedicated to fathers, that is, ancestors. On this day, donations to fathers and bathing in holy rivers are considered superior.

According to the Hindu Panchang and astronomical position, the moon completes one round of the earth in 28 days. After 15 days, the moon is at one end of the earth. When the Moon is at the other end of India, it cannot be seen. When the moon is not fully visible in India, that day is called Amavasya. And this event (Amavasya) can happen at different times according to the position of Chandra for each place or country.
