Historian Views

According to historians, this place used to be the ashram of Maharishi Asit earlier. Maharishi used to take bath in this river every day. It is believed that when Maharishi got old and it became difficult for him to reach the river, Ganga Mata left a stream of her water towards his ashram in which Maharishi used to take bath. That water stream is still located there. A holy rock is kept near Yamunotri temple, which is called Divya Shila. The devotees worship this rock before going to the temple, only after that they visit the temple.

The Yamuna river originated from Yamunotri temple itself. It is said that there are also two holy pools near it, which are known as Surya Kund and Gauri Kund. The water of Surya Kund is famous for the highest temperature. Devotees who come here cook rice in cloth bags in the water of Surya Kund and take it as prasad. It is said that those who bathe in Yamuna, Yama do not suffer at the time of death. There are also some hot water sources near Yamunotri.
