Chamundeshwari Temple, located atop the Chamundi Hills about 13 km from Mysuru (Mysore) in Karnataka, is one of South India’s most revered Shakti Peethas. The temple is dedicated to Devi Chamundeshwari (Chamundi Devi) — an incarnation of Devi Durga, who is said to have slain the demon Mahishasura, the buffalo-headed asura symbolizing evil.

Chamundeshwari Mandir History and Architecture
The main sanctum (garbhagriha) houses the idol of Devi Chamundeshwari adorned with gold and precious ornaments. The 1008-step stairway leading up to the temple is a major pilgrimage route, with many devotees climbing it barefoot.

A large Nandi (bull) statue, carved out of a single granite rock, sits midway up the hill — a sacred stop for visitors. During Navaratri (Dasara), the temple and Mysuru city come alive with grand celebrations and light displays. The temple architecture style is Dravidian style with a grand seven-tiered gopuram (tower). This is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas; the place where Goddess Chamundi killed Mahishasura. The temple complex also contains images of Bhagwan Ganesh, Bhog Nandishwara.

According to Hindu legend, Mahishasura, a powerful demon king, received a boon that no man could kill him. Drunk with power, he began terrorizing the heavens and the earth. To restore peace, the Gods created Goddess Chamundeshwari (an aspect of Durga), who defeated and killed Mahishasura on this very hill — hence Mysuru (earlier Mahishuru) derives its name from him.

A huge statue of Mahishasura stands near the temple entrance, holding a sword and a cobra — symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
