History and Architecture of Gauri Shankar Temple
The temple houses an 800-year-old brown lingam (symbol of Shiva) surrounded by marble snakes. It is built in the traditional North Indian style with intricate carvings and sculptures. The temple is dedicated to Gauri (Parvati) and Shankar (Shiva), who symbolize the divine couple. It houses an ancient Shivlinga, believed to be over 800 years old, and is housed in a sanctum sanctorum covered with silver foil.
It is said that this lingam has been worshipped long before the formal temple structure was built around it. The temple has traditional Nagari style architecture, with shikharas, intricate carvings and idols of deities. Inside, the walls are adorned with paintings and depictions of stories from Hindu mythology, particularly those related to Shiva and Parvati.

The temple is open throughout the week and the darshan timings are usually from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm.
Major Festivals of Gauri Shankar Temple
During festivals like Mahashivratri and Navratri, this temple becomes a major hub of spiritual activities. Maha Shivratri festival is the biggest festival of the temple, under which a procession of Bhagwan Shiva is taken out with great pomp and show from the temple to Chandni Chowk Road with bands. During the month of Shravan Somvar, there is a huge crowd of Kavariyas here. It is considered not just a place of worship but also a symbol of Maratha influence in Delhi during the 18th century.

The temple was built in 1761 by Appa Gangadhar, a Maratha soldier and devotee of Bhagwan Shiva. According to legend, Appa Gangadhar was seriously ill and vowed to build a temple in honour of Bhagwan Shiva. After recovering, he fulfilled his vow by building the temple.
