Babulnath Temple is a historic Hindu temple located near Girgaum Chowpatty on a small hill in South Mumbai. Babulnath Temple is one of Mumbai’s oldest and most revered Hindu shrines dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva. Bhagwan Shiva — known here as Babulnath (Bhagwan of the Babul Tree).
Babulnath Temple History and Architecture
❀ The temple’s name comes from Babul (a type of acacia tree) and Nath (Bhagwan), referring to the sacred Shiva lingam that was found under a babul tree.
❀ The gawala named Shri Babul has shown this Shivling to his Swami Shree Pandurang, hence the name of the temple is called Babulnath.
❀ In Hindi, the meaning of Babul or Baba is everyone`s guardian and father. Hence, be a guardian of all Lord Shiva named as Babulnath.
❀ It is believed the site originally had a Shiva temple as far back as the 12th century, and the present structure evolved over time, with a tall spire added around 1900.
❀ The temple is built in a traditional style with limestone and marble, featuring richly carved pillars and shikhara (spire). There are also smaller shrines within the complex dedicated to other deities such as Ganesh and Hanuman. The elevation offers peaceful views overlooking the Arabian Sea area.
❀ The Maharashtra government recently renewed the temple’s lease for another 30 years at a symbolic rent of ₹1, recognizing its religious and cultural importance in Mumbai.
❀ To reach the temple, you can either climb around 80–100 steps or use the elevator (nominal charge).
