History and Architecture of Raghunath Temple Jammu
The Raghunath Temple was first constructed by the Dogra ruler Maharaja Gulab Singh in the year 1835 and later completed by his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh in the year 1860 during the Dogra rule. The temple has many deities in its complex of shrines, but the main deity is Lord Rama - also known as Raghunath, an incarnation of Vishnu. The temples also house a large number of Shaligrams.
It is one of the largest temple complexes in North India, consisting of seven temples, each of which is covered in gold. The surrounding temples house deities such as Lord Shiva, Surya and various Vishnu avatars. The interiors are lavishly decorated: the walls are covered with gold sheets, and the panels depict scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the Bhagavad Gita. A gallery houses the sacred lingam and shaligrams; there is also a library and school that houses over 6,000 Sanskrit manuscripts, an impressive collection in the Sarada script.
Sadly, the temple was targeted in two terrorist attacks in 2002 (March 30 and November 24), resulting in the death of over 20 people and injuries to many more. Since then, security measures have been significantly strengthened.
