
Srikanteshwara Temple, Nanjangud (also known as Nanjundeshwara Temple) is a famous and ancient Shiva temple located on the banks of the Kapila River (Kabini) in the town of Nanjangud, about 25 kilometers from Mysore, Karnataka. This temple is often called the \"Kashi of the South\" because of its religious significance and the belief that a pilgrimage here is as sacred as a pilgrimage to Kashi.
Srikanteshwara Temple Darshan Timings
The temple is open throughout the week, with darshan timings from 6:00 AM to 1:30 PM and from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM. On Sundays, the temple is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

❀ Rathotsava: This grand annual festival attracts thousands of devotees, where the idol of Lord Srikanteshwara is taken in a beautifully decorated chariot.

❀ By road: 25 km from Mysore and about 160 km from Bengaluru.
❀ By Rail: Nanjangud Town Railway Station connects Mysore and Chamarajanagar.
❀ By Air: The nearest airport is Mysore Airport (about 20 km).
❀ Main deity: Lord Srikanteshwara (a form of Lord Shiva).
❀ The name Srikanteshwara means Lord who drinks poison, which is related to the legend of Lord Shiva drinking the Halahala poison during the churning of the ocean.
❀ Locals also call him Nanjundeshwara – nanju means poison and unda means consumer.
❀ According to legend, Bhagwan Parshuram worshipped Shiva here to absolve himself of the sin of killing his mother.
❀ According to another legend, King Tipu Sultan's royal elephant was cured of a fatal illness by sprinkling holy water from this temple. In gratitude, Tipu Sultan called Shiva here Hakim Nanjunda (meaning Physician Lord Nanjunda).
❀ Built in the Dravidian style, the temple complex features a magnificent gopuram (tower) and a spacious courtyard.
❀ The inner sanctum houses a Shivalinga named Srikanteshwara.
❀ The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Parvati, Ganapati, Subrahmanya, Nandi, and Chandikeshwara.
The temple's stone carvings and sculptures reflect Hoysala and Vijayanagara influences.
