History and Architecture of the Srikanteshwara Temple

❀ Main deity: Lord Srikanteshwara (a form of Lord Shiva).
❀ The name Srikanteshwara means Lord who drinks poison, which is related to the legend of Lord Shiva drinking the Halahala poison during the churning of the ocean.
❀ Locals also call him Nanjundeshwara – nanju means poison and unda means consumer.
❀ According to legend, Bhagwan Parshuram worshipped Shiva here to absolve himself of the sin of killing his mother.
❀ According to another legend, King Tipu Sultan's royal elephant was cured of a fatal illness by sprinkling holy water from this temple. In gratitude, Tipu Sultan called Shiva here Hakim Nanjunda (meaning Physician Lord Nanjunda).
❀ Built in the Dravidian style, the temple complex features a magnificent gopuram (tower) and a spacious courtyard.
❀ The inner sanctum houses a Shivalinga named Srikanteshwara.
❀ The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Parvati, Ganapati, Subrahmanya, Nandi, and Chandikeshwara.
The temple's stone carvings and sculptures reflect Hoysala and Vijayanagara influences.
