The Arulmigu Thyagaraja Swamy Temple is one of the most famous and ancient Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. Located in the historic city of Tiruvarur, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped as Thyagaraja (Veedhi Vidangar). It is considered one of the important Paadal Petra sites revered by Tamil Shaivite saints.

The temple was originally founded by the Pallavas in the 7th century, and the present massive stone structure was built in the 9th century during the reign of the Chola dynasty. The Vijayanagara rulers added further additions between the 14th and 16th centuries. The ancestors of the famous religious saint Tyagaraja were associated with the temple.

According to Bhaktibharat, the temple's Kamalalayam temple pond is one of the largest temple ponds in India. Lord Thyagaraja is associated with the unique divine dance form called \"Ajapa Nattanam.\" It is one of the Sapta Vidanga Sthalams, which relate the stories of King Muchukunda and Indra. The temple's massive chariot (Aazhi Thera) is considered one of the largest temple chariots in India.
