Kakanmath Temple is a wonderful ruined Shiva temple, the name of the temple is known after Queen Kakanvati. This temple was built in the 11th century on the orders of Kirtiraj, who was probably the queen of Kachhapaghat ruler.

A legend about this temple is that this temple was built by ghosts in a single night. At the time of morning, a local woman runs a mill for the kitchen of the house and after hearing the sound of the mill, ghosts stop the temple work in the middle and leave from there.

It is a very strange thing in the architectural feature of the temple that no cement or coating has been used to join the big stones involved in the construction of the temple. It is very important for a person interested in history to know that, how possible is it to build its storey high structure in today's time. And some valuable, important and beautiful sculptures are still missing from the walls of the temple.

Kakanmath Architecture?
The Kakanmath temple appears to be architecturally built in the Khajuraho style. There is no guide facility of any kind in the temple premises. Scattered ruins and broken fragments around the temple, giving evidence of the existence of more temples or religious structures around the temple.

Looking at the Kakanmath temple from inside, it seems that no big rock should fall from above. But this structure has remained the same for the last 100 years. This temple is a very good place for photography.

This temple comes under the National Protected Monument. There is no official priest or Mahant appointed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. All the people working in the temple are from the Archaeological Survey of India are regular employees only.

The temple was built by the Kachhapaghat ruler Kirtiraj in the name of his queen Kaknavati in the 11th century.

Known by the name of Kakanmath temple, this wonderful temple is preserving its sculpture even in ruins. Built on a large platform, the architectural plan of this temple has a sanctum sanctorum, a pillared pavilion and an attractive facade, in which there is a provision of stairs in the front for entry. The Shivalinga installed in the sanctum sanctorum is the main deity of the temple.Atop the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is a huge shikhara (about 100 feet high) which is now in a dilapidated state and only its inner stone is now visible. In its original form, other small temples were also built around this temple, some remains of which can be seen. The temple is named after Queen Kaknavati who was probably the queen of Kachhapaghat ruler Kirtiraj, on whose orders this temple was built in the 11th century.
