Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa, located near Bhubaneswar, is one of the most serene and historically significant sites. It is a beautiful blend of Buddhist spirituality and ancient Indian history.
Historical Significance of the Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa
The Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa is believed to be the site of the Kalinga War (261 BCE) fought by Emperor Ashoka. After witnessing the horrific bloodshed near the Daya River, Ashoka embraced Buddhism. This conversion changed the course of Indian history and paved the way for the spread of peace and non-violence.
The main attraction here is the beautiful statues of Buddha depicting meditation, enlightenment, and preaching. The serene environment is ideal for meditation and contemplation. The place is surrounded by greenery and has a peaceful atmosphere.
According to Bhaktibharat, also known as the Peace Pagoda, it was built in 1972 by the Japan Buddhist Association and the Kalinga Nippon Buddhist Association. The Ashoka Memorial (Ashoka Rock Edict) at Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa is an important historical monument that symbolizes the revival of Buddhism and the promotion of peace by Emperor Ashoka after the Kalinga War.
Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa Darshan Timings
The Shanti Stupa is open throughout the week and darshan timings are from 6:00 AM to 6:00 or 7:00 PM.
Major Celebrations at Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa
Buddha Jayanti is the main festival here. Tourists visit throughout the year. Every evening, except Mondays, a light and sound show is held, telling the story of the Kalinga War.
How to Reach Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa
Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa is located on the Dhauli Hills, about 8 kilometers south of Bhubaneswar, on the banks of the Daya River. It is easily accessible by cab, taxi, or auto-rickshaw. Bhubaneswar Railway Station is the nearest station, just 13 kilometers away, and Bijupatnaik International Airport is also easily accessible.
