Basava Jayanti is a Hindu festival celebrated by the Lingayat majority in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on the birthday of Basavanna. Prabhu Basavanna was the founder of Lingayatism and his birthday is considered to mark the beginning of a new era, called Basavanna Yuga or Basaveshwara Yuga. Basaveshwara's birthday usually falls on the third day of the month of Vaishakh. The next Basava Jayanti will be celebrated on Friday, 10th May 2024.

How is Basava Jayanti celebrated?
❀ It is declared as a state holiday in Karnataka. Because it has a large number of Basavanna's followers in Karnataka.
❀ People from all cities and villages in Karnataka celebrate in a grand manner. On this day people visit the temples of Prabhu Basaveshwara and offer prayers. It is an important day for farmers.
❀ Lingayat committees organize various events and this is common in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
❀ People exchange sweets and wishes on Basava Jayanti. There will be lectures to remember Basavanna's teachings.
❀ Many people like to visit Kudalsangam, which celebrates Basava Jayanti for 6-7 days and organizes many cultural and spiritual events.

On 14 November 2015, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the bust of Basavanna on the banks of the River Thames in Lambeth, London.

Who is Prabhu Basavanna?

Prabhu Basavanna was a great poet, social reformer and philosopher. Prabhu Basavanna is the guru of Lingayat community, Lingayat religion is a part of the oldest Sanatan Hindu religion of India. Most of the followers of this sect are in South India. This belief is based on worshiping the praise of prabhu Shiva. With Bijjal as the chief minister of the state, Basavanna started the Anubhav Mandap, which later became the common center for people of all sections to openly discuss the spiritual issues of life. He is also known as Bhakti Bhandari (literally, Treasurer of Bhakti), or Basaveshwara (Prabhu Basava).
