Kali Jayanti is celebrated on the day of Krishna Ashtami of the month of Shravan (full moon Bhadrapad month) according to the Hindu calendar. Devi Kali is the first Mahavidya among the ten Mahavidyas and belongs to the Kali clan. According to Devi Bhagavat Purana, the various gentle and fierce forms of Devi Mahakali are known as the ten Mahavidyas. Devi Mahakali is the power of Bhagwan Shiva's Mahakaal form.
According to the description found in Brahmaneel Tantra, Devi Kali exists in two forms, red and black. The black coloured Kali is called Dakshina and the red coloured Kali is called Sundari. Due to the Devi's complexion being as black as Kajal, she became famous in the world by the name of Kali.
