Raksha Bandhan is the most important festival of brotherhood in Hinduism. On this festival, the sisters tie the Raksha Sutras on the wrists of their brothers and wish their beloved brother a long and healthy life. And the brothers promise to protect their sister. The sisters tie this Raksha Sutra in the right hand of their brother, this Raksha Sutra is often called Rakhi.
As per the Hindu lunar calendar, Raksha Bandhan is observed on the last day of Shravan month, which typically falls in August. The expression Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit literature it means the bond of protection.
Raksha Bandhan celebration in Different states:
❀ In West Bengal and Odisha, this day is also called Jhulan Purnima. Prayers and puja of Bhagwan Shri Krishna and Radha are performed in a lavish way. Sisters tie rakhi to brothers and wish long life.
❀ In Maharashtra, among the Koli community, the festival of Raksha Bandhan/Rakhi Pournima is celebrated along with Narali Pournima (coconut day festival).
❀ In the regions of North India, mostly Jammu, it is a common practice to fly kites on the nearby occasions of Janamashtami and Raksha Bandhan.
❀ Haryana, in addition to celebrating Raksha Bandhan, people observe the festival of Salono.
