Varaha Dwadashi is dedicated to the Varaha avatar of Sri Hari Vishnu. Varaha was the third incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu during the Satya Yuga. On the occasion of Varaha Dwadashi, special pujas are organized in the temples of Bhagwan Vishnu. It is celebrated on the Dwadashi date of Madhav maas i.e. Magh Shukla Paksha.
Who is Varaha Dev?
Varahadev, is the boar incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu. He assumed the form of a boar to lift the sinking planet Earth from the Garbhodaka ocean with his tusks. The demon Hiranyaksha had thrown the planet Earth into this sea, but the Bhagwan killed the demon with his teeth and saved the earth.
Why is Varaha Dwadashi celebrated?
❀ On Varaha Dwadashi, people believe that by worshiping Bhagwan Vishnu and his incarnation Varaha, one gets wealth, happiness, good health in his life.
❀ Bhagwan Vishnu incarnated himself as Varaha to remove evil from the world. It is believed that by observing this day one attains salvation.
How to observe Varaha Dwadashi fast?
❀ Bhagwan Vishnu is specially worshiped in the form of Bhagwan Varah. The day is celebrated only in some regions and by some Hindu communities, specially celebrated by ISKCON. Varaha Jayanti is celebrated during Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha (August-September), the most important day dedicated to Bhagwan Varaha.
❀ Bhagwan Varah is installed in a vessel filled with water and he is worshiped on this day. An offering is prepared and the usual worship rituals associated with Bhagwan Vishnu are followed.
❀ In the Vedic lunar calendar, Dwadashi follows Ekadashi, a day set aside for spiritual activity and special attention to fasting—at least from grains and legumes. Ekadashi fasting is considered incomplete unless the next day, Dwadashi fasting is observed at the appropriate time.
❀ It is considered very auspicious to donate on this day.
❀ The mantra to be chanted on this day is 'Om Varahaya Namah'.
