History and Architecture of the Bahuchara Mata Temple

The religious tradition of Bahuchara Mata is centered at the ancient, sacred site of Becharaji. The principal shrine here is associated with a Varkhadi tree; according to local belief, the Goddess manifested at this very spot. A gold-covered crystal 'Bala Yantra' is worshipped at this sacred site.

Traditionally, Goddess Bahuchara Mata is depicted as a four-armed deity riding a rooster; the rooster is her distinctive mount. The Kinnar (transgender) community holds Bahuchara Mata in special reverence as their patron deity, making the temple a significant religious and cultural center for the community. This temple is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Mehsana and is considered part of the tradition of the 52 Shaktipeeths.

According to a popular legend, when Bahuchara Mata and her sisters were passing through this region, they encountered a bandit named Bapiya. When he attempted to attack them, it is said that Bahuchara Mata invoked her divine power and cursed him. Later, this story became linked to the Goddess's association with gender transformation and her special place in the traditions of the Kinnar (transgender) community.

According to another popular legend, Vallabh Bhatt was a renowned devotee of Bahuchara Mata. The temple's sacred traditions associate him with the devotional composition \"Anand no Garbo.\" The temple's religious practices also include the making of vows and offerings by devotees seeking blessings for the well-being of their children and families.

The Bahuchara Mata temple complex showcases traditional Hindu temple architecture and comprises several sacred structures associated with the Goddess. The 'Bala Yantra'—a crystal yantra associated with Bahuchara Mata—is enshrined within the Adyasthan beneath a gold covering.
