Kapila Theertham History and Architecture

The Kapila Theertham temple is built in the traditional Dravidian style and is situated at the entrance of a natural mountain cave. It houses the Sri Kapileswara Swamy Lingam, which is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested). A large stone statue of Nandi welcomes devotees at the entrance. The waterfall cascades directly into the temple's sacred tank, creating a unique spiritual atmosphere.

Kapila Teertham is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites associated with Tirumala. It is believed that bathing in its holy waters—especially during the month of Karthika—purifies devotees and bestows spiritual merit upon them. Many pilgrims visit Kapila Teertham before proceeding to the hilltop Tirupati Balaji Tirumala Venkateswara Temple.

According to belief, the great sage Kapila Muni performed severe penance at this very spot. Pleased by his devotion, Bhagwan Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared before him. The Shiva Linga worshipped here is considered Swayambhu (self-manifested), and the site came to be known as Kapila Tirtham. The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi, Ganesha, Subramanya, Krishna, and other deities.

This temple has a long history and enjoyed the patronage of rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire, including Krishnadevaraya. Historical inscriptions indicate that the temple has existed since at least the Chola period and was subsequently expanded by various South Indian dynasties.
