Sivasagar Shivdol is one of the most famous Shiva temples in Assam, located in the town of Sivasagar. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is considered one of the holiest Shiva temples in Northeast India. Situated on the southern bank of the historic Sivasagar (Borpukhuri) tank, the temple complex comprises three temples dedicated to Lord Shiva (Shivdol), Lord Vishnu (Vishnudol), and Goddess Durga (Devidol).

How to Reach Sivasagar Shivdol
Sivasagar Shivdol is located on the banks of the beautiful Sivasagar Tank in Sivasagar, Assam. Sivasagar is well-connected via NH-37 and the surrounding road network of Upper Assam. Simaluguri Junction is the nearest major railway station, situated approximately 14–16 km from the town. Sivasagar Town Railway Station is much closer to the city center—within 1 to 5 km of the temple—and serves local as well as select express trains. Jorhat Airport is the nearest airport.

History and Architecture of Sivasagar Shivdol

Sivasagar Shivdol was built in 1734 AD by Queen Ambika, the chief queen of the Ahom King Shiva Singha. This temple symbolizes the flourishing of Shaivism during the Ahom dynasty. It is an active place of worship and one of the most important historical monuments in Assam.

This temple is built in the distinctive Ahom architectural style, which also reflects the influence of the Nagara style. The main temple stands approximately 180 feet (55 meters) tall, making it the tallest temple in Assam. It was constructed using brick and stone masonry. The structure comprises an octagonal sanctum, an entrance hall, and a mandapa (pillared hall). Its exterior is adorned with sculptures of Hindu deities, floral designs, and geometric carvings. A golden kalash (finial) crowns the towering shikhara (spire).
