Pandurang Shastri Athavale (1920–2003) was a revered Indian philosopher, spiritual leader, social reformer, and founder of the Swadhyaya Movement. He is lovingly known as “Dadaji.” His teachings combined devotion (Bhakti), self-study (Swadhyaya), and social transformation rooted in Vedic values.

As per bhaktibharat, dadaji deeply influenced by the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and Indian scriptures from a young age. Began delivering discourses on the Gita in his teenage years.

Swadhyaya Movement by Pandurang Shastri Athavale
In 1954, he formally started the Swadhyaya Movement, a spiritual and socio-cultural movement based on:
❀ Self-study of scriptures
❀ Devotion to God within every human being
❀ Selfless service (Bhakti-inspired action)

He emphasized the concept of “God within” (Antaryami Bhagwan) and promoted a sense of divine family called “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family).

Swadhyaya initiatives include:
❀ Yogeshwar Krishi (collective farming)
❀ Matsyagandha boats (community fishing projects)
❀ Tree temples (Vruksha Mandirs)
❀ Tribal and rural upliftment programs

Pandurang Shastri Athavale left his mortal body on 25 October 2003, but his teachings continue to inspire millions across India and abroad through Swadhyaya Parivar.
