The Bhairabi Temple is located on the outskirts of Tezpur in the Sonitpur district of the Indian state of Assam. Locally known as Bhairabi Devalaya, Maithan, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhairabi (a form of Durga), one of the Mahavidyas. According to mythology, Usha, daughter of the demon king Banasura, often came here to worship the goddess.
Bhairabi Temple Architecture and History
The temple is approximately 400 years old, although it has suffered damage due to earthquakes, including cracks in the pillars, damage to the upper floors, and some tilting. The current structure is relatively modern, but the original temple is ancient. The stone carvings inside the temple are believed to date back to the 9th century.
The architectural style is Assamese. The temple overlooks the Kolia Bhomora Setu Bridge, which lies along the Brahmaputra River. It is also located near the Bamuni Hills and the Bharali River.
The government manages the temple through the District Deputy Commissioner's office. The Borthakur family of Tezpur maintains it.
Bhairabi Temple Darshan Timings
The temple is open throughout the week, and darshan timings are from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Major Festivals at Bhairabi Temple
Durga Puja is celebrated with great pomp at the temple. Navratri and other Shakti festivals are also important. Daily prayers are offered, and sacrifices of goats, bulls, ducks, pigeons, etc. are part of local traditions.
How to Reach Bhairabi Temple
The temple is well connected by road. Distance from Tezpur main road: About 6 km by road. The temple is built on a small hill, accessible from the road via a long staircase. The nearest railway station is Tezpur Railway Station.
