The Danteshwari Temple is one of the most revered Shakti temples in India. It is situated near the confluence of the Dankini and Shankhini rivers in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. Goddess Danteshwari is considered a form of Goddess Durga. It is one of the most important temples in the Bastar region.

History and Architecture of the Danteshwari Temple

The Danteshwari Temple is deeply linked to the Kakatiya rulers, who established their reign in the Bastar region. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Danteshwari, the presiding deity (Kuldevi) of the former Bastar state. Traditionally, the Danteshwari Temple is considered one of the 52 Shakti Peethas. It is believed that a tooth (dant) of the Goddess fell here, giving the temple its name, Danteshwari.

The Kakatiya ruler Annamdev is credited with establishing the Danteshwari Temple in Dantewada during the 14th century. Stone masonry has been extensively used in the temple's main structure, lending it a robust and traditional appearance. A temple dedicated to Bhairav Baba is situated right inside the Natmandap of the Danteshwari Temple, and according to traditional belief, offering prayers here completes the pilgrimage to Goddess Danteshwari.

At the heart of the temple lies the sanctum sanctorum, where the sacred idol of Goddess Danteshwari is enshrined. This sanctum is the holiest part of the complex. Devotees reach the sanctum by passing through the temple hall and entranceways—areas well-suited for religious rituals and gatherings.
