Kaal Bhairav avatran on the Krishna Paksha Ashtami of Margashirsha month during the pradosha period, since then it is known as Bhairav Ashtami. Therefore, the worship of Kaal Bhairav should be done in the midday of Ashtami.
The responsibility of protecting Kashi has been assigned to Bhairav that’s why he is called Kotwal of Kashi. According to Shiv Purana, the incarnation (avatar) of Shree Bhairav occurs in Krishna paksha on the Ashtami of Margashirsha. According to the scriptures, the origination of India is done in the form of Lord Shiva’s modest form. Later, two forms of Shiv were born. First is Shree Batuk Bhairav and the second is Shree Kaal Bhairav. It is also believed that Shree Batuk Bhairav is the child form of God and is also called Anand Bhairav. While Shree Kaal Bhairav is originated from a curse, this is why it is considered to be Rudra Avatar of Shankar. The worship of this form of Lord Shiva can help to get rid of fear, freedom from the enemies and other crises. Shree Kaal Bhairav is a very dreadful and awkward form of Lord Shiva.
Shree Bhairav, a part of Shiva, is known to punish the bad spirits. Hence one of their names is Dandapanee. It is believed that Shree Bhairav was avtran from the blood of Lord Shiva, hence he is called Kaalabhairav. Once a demon Andhakasur attacked Lord Shiva, then Mahadev had born Bhairav with his blood for his demise. Out of Lord Shiv, Lord Shakti and Shree Bhairav, the first worship is said to be done of Shree Bhairav. In Kalika Purana, Shree Bhairav has been referred to as Mahadev's Gan. In Narada Purana, both Kaalbhairav and Maa Durga have been told to worship on this day.
