Kasar Devi is located in Almora in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Kasar Devi is the presiding deity of the Kumaon region. The Kasar Devi Temple is located on a hilltop in the Kashi Hills of Kumaon, off the Almora-Bageshwar road. Its elevation is approximately 2,116 meters above sea level. Swami Vivekananda meditated here in the 1890s, increasing the popularity of the site.
History and Architecture of Kasar Devi Temple
This temple is believed to date back to the 2nd century AD. According to the Skanda Purana and the Devi Bhagavata Purana, this is where Goddess Katyayani killed the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, and it is one of the 108 Shakti Peethas. The goddess's temple is located in a cave-like structure carved out of large rocks. There is an eternal flame that burns continuously, and a Dhuni/Havan Kund whose ashes are locally believed to have healing properties (especially mental/spiritual/emotional).
Over time it became a centre of attraction for spiritual seekers, sages, artists and writers – both Indian and foreign.
Due to its location on a hill, many claim that it has a strong geomagnetic field that contributes to a feeling of spiritual peace. NASA scientists have even visited the site to study the effects of this magnetic field.

How to Reach Kasar Devi Temple
Kasar Devi is located approximately 8-10 km from the city of Almora in Uttarakhand. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, approximately 90-105 km away. The nearest airport is Pantnagar, approximately 120-130 km away. The roads are winding but convenient.
Things to consider:
❀ Comfortable shoes (for trekking), warm clothing (it can be cold, especially in the mornings and evenings), water, and sun protection. Since mobile signal may be weak in some areas, plan accordingly.
❀ Spring (March-June) and autumn (September-November) offer pleasant weather and clear skies, making the Himalayan views spectacular. Monsoons can bring heavy rain and slippery trails.
