This temple is dedicated to Vatapatrasayi Perumal (Vishnu) and Andal (Nachiyar). It is believed that Periyalvar found Andal as an infant beneath a sacred Tulsi plant in the temple garden. The temple's 192-foot-tall Rajagopuram is one of the tallest temple towers in Tamil Nadu and is also associated with the state's official emblem. Built in the traditional Dravidian architectural style, it features inscriptions dating back to the Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara periods.
Andal composed devotional works such as 'Thiruppavai' and 'Nachiyar Thirumozhi', which are still recited today during the Tamil month of 'Margazhi'. This temple is considered one of the holiest centers of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
