✨Karadaiyan Nombu - करदैयान नोम्बू

Karadaiyan Nombu Date: Saturday, 14 March 2026

Karadaiyan Nombu (also known as Savithri Nombu or Karadayan Nonbu) is a traditional Tamil Hindu festival observed by married women (and sometimes unmarried girls) for the long life and well-being of their husbands or future husbands. It is observed at the exact moment when the Tamil month Maasi ends and Panguni begins — usually in March.

Mythological Significance of Karadaiyan Nombu
The festival is based on the legend of Savitri and Satyavan from the Mahabharata:
Princess Savitri married Satyavan, a prince fated to die within a year. On the destined day, when Yama (the God of Death) came to take Satyavan’s soul, Savitri followed him with steadfast devotion and wisdom. Impressed by her love and intelligence, Yama granted her a boon — restoring Satyavan’s life.

Thus, women observe Karadaiyan Nombu to pray for their husbands’ long and healthy lives, inspired by Savitri’s devotion.

❀ Women fast until the auspicious moment when the month changes.
❀ They worship Goddess Parvati and Savitri.
❀ A karadai (special steamed dish) made of rice flour and black-eyed peas (karamani) is offered.
❀ Two types of karadai are prepared: Sweet Karadai (Vella Adai) – made with jaggery and Salt Karadai (Uppu Adai) – made with salt and spices.
❀ Sacred Thread (Nombu Charadu): A yellow sacred thread is tied around the woman’s neck while praying, symbolizing protection and marital harmony.
❀ Married women pray for their husbands’ well-being, while unmarried girls pray for an ideal life partner.
