Suhagan women keep Vat Purnima fast for the long life of their in-laws and husband. Women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and South Indian states observe it on Jyestha Shukla Purnima.
Whereas in the states of North India like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, Vat Purnima is celebrated 15 days before the Jyeshtha Krishna Amavasya as Vat Savitri Vrat.
Two types of Panchang are more famous among Hindus in India, most of the festivals are based on these Amanata and Poornimanata Panchangs. Although fasting and festivals fall on the same day in both calendars, in some festivals there is a difference of days.
According to the Purnimanta Panchang of North India, Vat Savitri Vrat is celebrated on the new moon of the month of Jyeshtha. While according to the Amanata Panchang of the South, it is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Jyestha, and is also called Vat Purnima Vrat.
According to both the panchang, the fast and the mythology behind it are the same.
How to keep vat savitri fast
The importance of Vat Savitri fast is similar to the famous Karva Chauth fast among married women. Many women observe a fast for three days in this ritual. It is sometimes not possible to keep a fast for three days, so on the first day, food is eaten at night, on the second day fruit can be eaten, and on the third day a complete fast is observed.
