History and Architecture of the Arulmigu Sri Parthasarathyswamy Temple

The Sri Parthasarathyswamy Temple is built in the Dravidian architectural style, featuring magnificent gopurams, pillared halls, and intricately carved sculptures. Here, Lord Krishna is worshipped as Parthasarathy (Arjuna's divine charioteer) and Sri Vedavalli Thayar (Lakshmi) as his consort. The presiding deity bears a moustache, reflecting Lord Krishna's role as a warrior and charioteer. The idol of Parthasarathy is known for bearing marks of battle, symbolizing the wounds Krishna sustained while protecting Arjuna during the Kurukshetra War.

The temple was originally built by the Pallava kings in the 6th century CE and was later expanded by Chola and Vijayanagara rulers. Five principal forms of Lord Vishnu are worshipped here: Parthasarathy (Krishna), Yoga Narasimha, Ranganatha, Rama, and Gajendra Varadar.

This temple is a major center of Sri Vaishnavism, where saints such as Thirumazhisai Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar have offered worship. Even today, the temple attracts devotees seeking Lord Krishna's blessings for courage, wisdom, and a righteous life.
