History and Architecture of Matangeshwar Temple, Khajuraho
The Matangeshwar Temple was built between approximately 900 and 925 CE during the reign of the Chandela dynasty. It is believed to be associated with Sage Matang, from whom the temple derives its name. It is considered one of the earliest surviving temples in Khajuraho. It is believed that King Harsha of the Chandela dynasty commissioned the construction of this temple.

The temple's sanctum sanctorum houses a massive Shiva Linga—standing approximately 2.5 meters (8 feet) tall—making it one of the largest in India. While most temples in Khajuraho are primarily managed as heritage monuments, religious worship continues uninterrupted at the Matangeshwar Temple; this offers tourists a glimpse into how the complex functioned historically.

This temple is built in the traditional North Indian Nagara style and features a curvilinear *shikhara* (spire). It is the only major temple within the UNESCO-listed Khajuraho Group where daily worship takes place. A massive *linga* is the temple's most distinctive feature, attracting devotees from across India.
