Sri Sorakayala Swamy Temple is a famous spiritual shrine located in Narayanavanam, near Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Sri Sorakayala Swamy, an Avadhuta saint believed to possess divine healing powers and spiritual energy. \"Sorakaya\" in Telugu means bottle gourd.
History and Architecture of Sri Sorakayala Swamy Temple
The temple is famous for its eternal fire (dhuni). Devotees believe that the vibhuti (holy ash) distributed as prasadam possesses miraculous healing properties for physical and mental ailments. The temple houses the Jeeva Samadhi of Sri Sorakayala Swamy. The temple is located opposite the Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple.
Sri Sorakayala Swamy was known to always carry a bottle gourd with him and would dispense medicines, turmeric, and herbs to cure the illnesses of local devotees. Devotees offer bottle gourds (Sorakaya in Telugu) at the temple.
On August 9, 1902, the saint entered Jeeva Samadhi (a state of living samadhi) at the site. A shrine was built over his resting place.
