Swami Samarth Maharaj is considered the sixteenth incarnation of Lord Datta. His name and birth are well known; he lived in Akkalkot for a long time, hence his name "Akkalkot's Swami Samarth." After remaining in samadhi for 300 years, he appeared from Varul (the abode of snakes) on Chaitra Shukla Dwitiya Saptam 1071. He later traveled throughout India and finally settled in Akkalkot.
