Savitri Vrat is observed by married women in Odisha and eastern parts of India for the wellbeing of husbands. There are numerous Vratas based on the Savitri and Satyavan legend including the Vat Savitri Puja in North India and the Karadayin Savitri Nombu festival in Tamil Nadu. In 2022, the date of Savitri Vrat is on 30th May. Savitri Vrat falls on the Amavasya or No moon day in the month of Jyestha. This popular observance is based on the Savitri – Satyavan Legend in the Mahabharat.
Legend has it that Savitri was able to rescue her husband, Satyavan, from the clutches of Yamraj, the god of death. She achieved this impossible task through sheer determination, courage and perseverance.

Vrat Procedure:
Savitri Vrat fasting is from sunrise to sunset. An important event on the day that all married women compulsorily take part is the reading of the Sabitri Vrat Katha (story of Savitri). In some regions, the parents or brothers of married women pay for all the expenses needed for the Savitri Vrat Puja.
