What is sengol? What is the story behind this? (सेंगोल क्या है? क्या है इसके पीछे की कहानी?)

What is sengol? What is the story behind this?
India's new Parliament House is going to be inaugurated on 28 May. In view of this, Home Minister Amit Shah said during the press conference on Wednesday that the new Parliament building is an attempt to connect India's history, cultural heritage, tradition and civilization with modernity. During this time a historical tradition is being revived i.e. Sengol will be installed in the new parliament building.
What is sengol?
The word Sengol is derived from the Tamil language word 'semmai' which means religion, truth and loyalty. Sengol was accepted by the people of Tamil Nadu on 14 August 1947 by Jawaharlal Nehru.

Sengol is a scepter, which was used in the Chola Empire to transfer power to the new successor. In the Chola Empire, when a king declared his new successor, he handed over the Sengol scepter as a symbol to that new successor.

What is the reason for Sengol coming in the limelight?
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the resumption of the practice of 'sengol' (scepter) and said it is a symbol of the power Indians got from the British. Amit Shah said that before the inauguration of this new Parliament House, PM Narendra Modi will receive Sengol from Tamil Nadu.

Sengol should be part of the new parliament, how was it decided?
Indian classical Bharatanatyam dancer Padma Subrahmanyam wrote a letter to the Ministry of Culture suggesting the inclusion of Sengol in the new Parliament building. After this, the Ministry of Culture researched this fact and found it correct, and thus it was decided to make it a part of the new Parliament.

After this the Prime Minister will place it inside the new Parliament House. It will be kept near the seat of Sengol Speaker. Home Minister Amit Shah told that this Sengol has great importance. He further said, "It is inappropriate to place this holy sengol in a museum. There cannot be a more appropriate, holy and appropriate place than the Parliament House for the installation of sengol."

Where was Sengol these days?
Sengol was kept safe in the Nehru Museum in Prayagraj, now the government will install it in the new Parliament building of the country.
