Modhera Sun Temple is located in a village called Modhera, 30 km south of Patan in Mehsana, Gujarat. It is the second most famous temple after the Konark Sun Temple, Odisha. This Sun Temple is the main center of the major tourist destinations of the state of Gujarat.

Architecture of Modhera Sun Temple
This Modhera Sun Temple is built in the Iranian architectural style. This temple has two parts, one part is called the sanctum and the other part is the sabhamandap. The length of the sanctum is about 51 feet nine inches and the width is about 25 feet eight inches. A little ahead of the sabhamandap there is also a huge pool which is named as Suryakund or Ramakund.

On the other hand, if we talk about the hall, a total of 52 pillars are present in it. The biggest feature of these pillars is that beautiful pictures and episodes from the Ramayan and Mahabharat periods have been depicted on them. While constructing the Sun temple, special care was taken that the first ray of the sun falls on the sanctum and till date the first ray of the sun falls on the sanctum.

Mythological story related to Modhera Sun Temple
Modhera temple was built by a Suryavanshi king. According to Skanda and Brahma Purana, the area around Modhera was popularly known as Dharmarany in ancient times.Along with this, it is also mentioned in the Puranas that when Bhagwan Shri Ram had killed Ravan, he had sought a solution from his Guru Vashisth to get rid of this sin of killing Brahm. Guru Vashisth had asked to come to this place for self-purification and freedom from the sin of killing Brahm.

Modhera Dance Festival
After the Uttarayan festival in the third week of January by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, 'Uttaradha Mahotsav' is celebrated in the temple, in which a three-day dance festival is organized every year.

How to reach Modhera Sun Temple:
The place is very well connected with other cities, distance from Ahmedabad to Modhera is 101 km and it takes around 1.45 hours. From Mehsana it is 26 km by Train and by Air Nearest airport is Ahmedabad.
