Vilakku Pooja is symbolic of Mahalakshmi, the devi of fortune and prosperity. Mahalakshmi is worshiped collectively by a large number of women at a time by lighting lamps. It is said that it brings happiness and prosperity in the home and peace in the world. Thiru Vilakku Puja is performed mostly on Fridays either in the morning or in the evening by lighting a lamp. It is mainly performed during the Tamil months of Chithirai and Vaigasi, and this sacred lamp worship can also be performed on new moon and full moon days.
