According to local tradition, King Ratnadev I was blessed with a divine vision of Mata Mahamaya at Ratanpur in the 11th century. The temple was constructed around 1050 CE. The temple is associated with the Kalachuri dynasty, which made Ratanpur its capital. Remains of the city's ancient temples, palaces, and fortifications can still be found in the surrounding area. The temple is traditionally linked to the Shaktipeeth tradition; according to local belief, the right shoulder of Mata Sati fell at this site. The temple is constructed in the Nagara style of architecture.

The temple rests on 16 stone pillars and is enclosed by a large boundary wall. The temple complex also houses smaller shrines dedicated to various deities, including Mahakali, Bhadrakali, Surya, Vishnu, Hanuman, Bhairav, and Shiva.
