Thakurbari Temple, located in Gangtok, Sikkim, is one of the region's oldest and most important Hindu temples. Thakurbari Temple is dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva and Bhagwan Surya. The Thakurbari temple not only serves as a place of worship but also as a cultural center reflecting the rich spiritual heritage of Sikkim. Thakurbari Temple History and Architecture
Established in 1935 on land donated by Sir Thutop Namgyal, the former Maharaja of Sikkim, the temple stands as a testament to the religious tolerance of the Namgyal dynasty. Bhagwan Shiva is the prime god but the temple also houses idols of various Hindu deities, making it a prominent center for the Hindu community in Gangtok .

The temple complex underwent significant upgrades between 1945 and 1947 and was further expanded in 2011 to include a multipurpose hall and a library.

Temple is open for the whole week and the darshan timing is 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM. The best time to explore this temple is in the early hours of the morning as the priests conduct their rituals and you can get a glimpse into the Hindu community of Sikkim.
