होली (Holi) three days festival, considered as second biggest festival on Hindu calendar after Diwali. The word "Holi" originates from "Holika" (name of Bhakt Prahlad`s aunty), the evil sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. The festival itself is believed to have origins from the Prahladapuri Temple.

होलिका दहन (Holika Dahan)

Also known as Chhoti Holi, Holika Dahan, Basanta Purnima, Phalguna Purnima and Kama Dahanam in South India. On first day bonfires are lit after sunset at Right Holika Dahan Muhurta. Main Holi day when people play with colors is always next day of Holika Dahan or Holi bonfire. Next day in the morning people play Holi with dry and wet colors.

The second day, people play with colored powder(Gulal) and colored water. Rangwali Holi which is main Holi day is also known as Dhulandi or Dhulendi (धुलण्डी). The other less popular pronunciations of Dhulandi are Dhuleti, Dhulheti. Cheerleading slogans is बुरा ना मानो होली है (Bura Na Maano Holi Hai).

Prahladapuri Temple

The original temple of Prahladpuri is said to have been built by Prahlada Ji, Hiranyakashipu's son. Prahladpuri Mandir is an ancient Hindu temple located in Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. It is named after Prahlada and dedicated to the God Narasimha (Shri Vishnu). At present it ruins, since its destruction in 1992 by a mob.


गुलरियाँ (Hindi: Gulariyan, English: cow dung cake) are used on the day of holika dahan for bonfire. Gulariyan are made by cow gober(Hindi: गोबर, English: dung), by combining their hole, create a chain called as Gulariyon ki mala. One interesting fact is also associated with the creation date of these Gulariyan, we can only start creation of these gulariyan from Phalgun Shukla Dwitiya (also called Phulera Dooj)
