Maharaja Agrasen was a Vaishya king of the Suryavansh who adopted Vanika Dharma for the welfare of his subjects. Literally, Agrawal means "children of Agrasen" or "people of Agrasen", a city in the ancient Kuru Panchal near Hisar in the Haryana region, founded by Maharaja Agrasen.

Agrasen was a great Indian king from the merchant city of Agroha. He is credited with founding the kingdom of merchants called Agroha in northern India and is known for his compassion in refusing to kill animals in sacrifices. The birth tithi of Maharaja Agrasen is always celebrated as Agrasen Jayanti.

Maharaja Agrasen was a karta (a karma yogi) who gave the mantra of prosperity for all. A follower of socialism, he formulated a unique set of rules to ensure an egalitarian society. The spirit of the present Constitution of India is the ideas of equality, socialism and non-violence propounded by Maharaj Agrasen 5000 years ago.
