Sri Trailanga Swami is very famous with stories of his yogic powers and longevity. According to some accounts, Trailanga Swami was 280 years old and lived in Varanasi between 1737 and 1887. He is considered by devotees to be an incarnation of Bhagwan Shiva and a Hindu yogi, possessor of spiritual powers as well as a great mystic.

He is such a celebrated figure in Bengal that Sri Ramakrishna referred to him as the "Walking Shiva of Varanasi". He used to spend his time writing Sanskrit shlokas and giving advice to others. It is said that he could lie down in the waters of the Ganges without drowning, and went under water for long periods of time without breathing. His philosophy and teachings were later recorded by his disciple Umacharan Mukhopadhyay in his writings.

Trailanga Swami's birth anniversary is celebrated on the Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Pausha or on the eleventh day of the bright half of the moon in the month of Pausha.
