Swami Ram Tirtha was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, and spiritual teacher who became one of the prominent modern-era thinkers of Advaita Vedanta. He taught that the 'divine self' is the true nature of every human being, and inspired people to rise above fear, selfishness, and narrow identities.

According to Swami Ram Tirath’s Advaita Vedanta, our fundamental identity is not limited merely to the body, mind, or ego. Our true 'Self' is one with 'Brahman' (the Ultimate Reality). He encouraged people to recognize their inner strength, rather than remaining entangled in feelings of insecurity, concerns about social status, or the fear of failure. In his teachings, the meaning of 'true renunciation' was not merely the abandonment of material possessions, but rather liberation from selfish attachment and the 'illusion of separateness.' He emphasized the unity of humanity and propagated the ideas of Vedanta among people in India, Japan, and the United States. Read About Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

In 1902, Swami Ram Tirath traveled to Japan and subsequently arrived in the United States, where he delivered lectures on Vedanta, spiritual freedom, and the unity of existence. These teachings helped introduce the Western world to Indian philosophical thought during the early twentieth century. His legacy is preserved primarily through collections of his lectures, letters, and conversations, rather than in the form of a single, definitive philosophical treatise. His teachings are often published under titles such as 'In Woods of God-Realization'.

Swami Ram Tirath passed away in 1906, at the age of about 32. Despite his brief life, he left a profound impression on students of Vedanta and readers interested in Indian spirituality. His message is to discover the divine truth within oneself, live fearlessly, and recognize the unity that lies behind all existence.
