How is the Festival Celebrated?
The festival Gokulashtami, known as Krishna Janmashtami, celebrates Krishna's birth and Dahi Handi celebration. The day is celebrated more popularly in Gujarat and Maharashtra. This year on 16 August 2025 Janmashtami and Dahi Handi will be celebrated.

Bhagwan Shri Krishna was born at midnight on the eighth of Bhadra month, this day is celebrated with pomp across the country. The tradition of Dahi-Handi is also played on this special occasion in various states of the country. Yogurt and butter filled with curd are hung at crossroads at different places across the country. After this, Govinda breaks the human pyramid by climbing on top of each other.

Krishna was born in the Rohini Nakshatra from the womb of Mata Devki. Kansa kept Mata Devki and her husband Vasudev in prison. However, before he was put in jail, it was already stated that the eighth child of Devki and Vasudev would cause Kansa's death.

Since this Akashvani, Kansa killed all the children of Devki one by one. When Bhagwan Krishna was born as the eighth child, Vasudev somehow took him safely from there to Yashoda and Nanda to Gokul. It was from here that Krishna's child pastimes started.

Bhagwan Krishna has loved Makhan since childhood. He often stole Makhan from the gopis. Gopis used to complain about this to mother Yashoda. After which Mata Yashoda used to explain to her Kanha, but it did not affect her.

The gopis had started hanging them at a height to save their makhan matka’s from Krishna, but Krishna used to reach those matka’s with his friends. Many times Krishna also used to break the matka’s of the gopis. The Dahi-Handi festival is celebrated by remembering their mischievous childhood and how Krishna stole butter and other milk products as a baby (he is also called Makhan chor).
