Neerputhoor Mahadeva Temple is a famous Shiva temple located in Puthoor village of Kerala’s Malappuram district. The temple is especially known for its unique sanctum sanctorum, which remains filled with water throughout the year. Devotees believe this sacred water represents the divine presence of Goddess Ganga.
Neerputhoor Mahadeva Temple History and Architecture
Neerputhoor Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shivalinga. Lord Shiva here is lovingly called Neerputhurappan by devotees.
The Shiva Lingam is surrounded by water all year, creating a rare and mystical atmosphere.
The temple is believed by local traditions to be around 3,000 years old.
The sanctum is circular in the traditional Kerala architectural style. As per Bhaktibharat, devotees usually take darshan from a special viewing area called Pattupura. During summer, when water levels reduce, devotees may enter deeper into the temple premises.

Neerputhoor Mahadeva Temple is open all week, and the darshan timings are 6 AM to 9:30 AM. On Sunday, it opens till 10 AM.
Neerputhoor Mahadeva Temple Prime Festivals
Maha Shivaratri, Sahasra Deepam are the prime festivals here. Special Shiva poojas and homams, Ganapathy Homam, Mrityunjaya Homam, Divasa Pooja also performed here.
How to reach Neerputhoor Mahadeva Temple
Sree Neerputhoor Shiva Temple is situated in Puthoor village in Malappuram district in Kerala. The place is well-connected by roadways. The nearest KSRTC bus stand is Perinthalmanna, and you can easily visit the temple. Tirur Railway Station is the nearest one and Calicut International Airport is the nearest airport.
1. Timing: Try to arrive before 7 AM as darshan is only available between 6:30 AM and 9 AM.
2. Attire: Women can wear sarees, churidars, and kurtas. Men are only allowed to enter wearing dhoti/mundu – shirts/T-shirts must be removed.
3. Try to visit during June to November as there is more water in the sanctum sanctorum during these months.
