Poila Boishakh or Pahela Baishakh, also known as Bangla Nabo-Barsho or Bengali New Year. It is the first day of the Bengali calendar. It is celebrated as New Year's Day.
According to the Sun, Poila Boishakh is occurs on the day of Mesha Sankranti. Usually, this day is celebrated every year on 14 April or 15 April. The festival is celebrated by the Bengali community all over the world on 15 April.
How is Poila Boishakh celebrated?
On this day people of Bengali community wear new clothes. Also, pray Maa Kali and in Kolkata people visit Dakshineswar and Belur Math for sakal pujo (Morning prayer). From this day onwards traders begin to audit their business. Business people pray Bhawan Ganesh and Devi Lakshmi for a prosperous business. On this day many types of dishes are made in the home of Bengali people. All temples decorated and Gou Mata, also worshiped on this day.
In many villages, lots of games were also held on the day of Poila Boishakh. Also, many people go to their homes with Radha-Krishna's idol to worship them. There is also a tradition of burning straw on the Bengali New Year day. It is believed that in this straw, people sacrifice their past year's sufferings.
