Gulika Kaal (गुलिका काल)

Gulika Kaal also known as Maandi, Kuligai Kaal is a special period in Vedic Astrology ruled by Saturn, during which certain activities are considered inauspicious. Gulika Kaal is the one and a half hour period daily ruled by Saturn, calculated based on the division of sunrise to sunset. It is best avoided for inauspicious actions because of the repetition of karma—and can be used for positive, purposeful repetition. In your birth chart, the placement of Gulika represents karmic influences, often challenging but practical.
What is Gulika Kaal?
It is not a physical planet, but a satellite—a shadowy point ruled by Saturn—similar to Rahu or Ketu. Mythologically, it is associated with Saturn's son and represents Saturn's influence. What is Bhadra?

This is considered an inauspicious time to begin important tasks, as anything started during this period is believed to be repetitive or give negative results.

How is Gulika Kaal calculated?
Gulika Kaal is a period of 1 hour and 30 minutes, calculated daily based on the sunrise time of a specific location.

Gulika Kaal is calculated by dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into eight equal parts, and the specific time period is different for each day.

Example:
Saturday: first segment
Friday: second
Thursday: third
And so on, backwards from the day of Saturn (Saturday)

Normal Daily Timings (Approximate):

Day Gulika Kaal
❀ Sunday 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
❀ Monday 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
❀ Tuesday 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM
❀ Wednesday 10:30am to 12:00pm
❀ Thursday 9:00am to 10:30am
❀ Friday 7:30am to 9:00am
❀ Saturday 6:00am to 7:30am
(these change daily depending on sunrise/sunset times)

Why it is important:

❀ It is considered an inauspicious time to start important tasks, as any task started during this period is believed to be repetitive or give negative results.

❀ Gulika Kaal is calculated by dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into eight equal parts, and the specific time period is different for each day.

❀ Though Gulika Kaal is generally avoided for starting new ventures, it is not as dreadful as Rahu Kaal or Yamagandam, yet it is advised to avoid starting important work during this time.

❀ In South India, especially in Kerala, Gulika Kalam is taken very seriously and it is advised to be avoided for auspicious works.

Practical guidelines:
❀ Avoid starting funerals, medical rituals or legal matters during this time.
❀ Perform daily or spiritual activities like meditation, Shani Puja or introspection.
❀ If the required work coincides with Gulika Kaal, perform the following remedies: Chant Shani Mantras, donate black sesame seeds or oil, and perform a Shani-related puja.
