Chitalagi Amavasya also known as Chitau Amavasya is a traditional festival celebrated in Odisha, India, mainly by the followers of Bhagwan Jagannath cult. It is usually celebrated on the new moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan (July-August). The pyre, also known as the forehead ornament Chitalagi, is the return of the pyre on the new moon day.
Rituals observed at Puri Jagannath Temple:
❀ The main ritual involves restoring the \"chitra\", the golden ornament placed on the forehead of Bhagwan Jagannath, which is removed during the Snan Yatra.
❀ On Chitalagi Amavasya, the pyre is ceremonially reinstalled on the forehead of the deities at the Jagannath Temple in Puri.

Chitau Pitha Offering
❀ Devotees prepare and offer Chitau Pitha, traditional rice pancakes made from rice flour, coconut and jaggery.
❀ It is offered to deities at home and in temples and also consumed as prasad.
Festival of Fisherman Community
In coastal areas, especially among fishermen communities, Chitalagi Amavasya is a day of special rituals to seek blessings for safe journey and good fishing. Some communities also worship their fishing nets and boats on this day.
Spiritual significance of Chitalagi Amavasya
Chitalagi Amavasya is considered auspicious for Pitru Puja as it falls on Amavasya day. Many people perform Shradh or Tarpan (pitru tarpan) in honour of the departed souls.
