Purnima is a monthly festival on the Shukla Paksha of every month, so purnima can occur 12 times a year, and 13 times in the case of more months. Poona, Pooranamasi, Poonam are the different names of purnima in various folk languages.

According to the Hindu Panchang and astronomical position, the moon completes a round of the earth in 28 days. After 15 days, the Moon is at one end of the Earth. When the Moon is towards India, it is seen in its full state. When the moon appears in full form in India, that day is called the purnima day. And this event purnima (full moon) can happen at different times according to the position of the moon for each place or country.
