History and Architecture of Madan Mohan Temple, Karauli

The Madan Mohan Temple is primarily constructed from the distinctive stone of Karauli and reflects the traditions of medieval architecture. According to temple tradition, the idol of Shri Madan Mohan Ji was originally associated with Maharaja Vajranabh, the great-grandson (grandson's son) of Lord Krishna. Traditionally, this idol is regarded as one of the three ancient forms of Krishna—Madan Mohan, Govind Dev, and Gopinath—whose smaller shrines are located near the main temple.

Sanatan Goswami, a disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, discovered this idol in Vrindavan during the 16th century. During the Mughal era, the idol was removed from Vrindavan for safety and eventually reached Karauli in 1742 CE. According to the temple's historical records, Maharaja Gopal Singh later installed the idol in Karauli, and it was permanently consecrated in 1748 CE.
