The Dalai Lama, a follower of Buddhism, is seen as a symbol of compassion. On the other hand, his supporters also consider him as their leader. The Dalai Lama is seen primarily as a teacher. Lama means Guru. Lama inspires his people to follow the right path.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is regarded by Tibetan Buddhists as Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are perfected beings, driven by the desire to attain perfect enlightenment, who have taken a vow to be reborn in the world to help all living beings. The leader of Tibetan Buddhism guides all Buddhists around the world. The 14th Dalai Lama has received many awards for his spiritual and political career. He received an award for community leadership at the 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Awards, Asia's version of the Nobel Prize.

After years of scattered protests, a full-scale rebellion broke out in March 1959 and the Dalai Lama was forced to flee as the rebellion was crushed by Chinese troops. On March 31, 1959, he began a permanent exile in India, settling in Dharamsala, where he established a democratically based shadow Tibetan government.
