Jagannatha Dasa (1490 – 1550 CE, approx.) was a great saint, poet, and philosopher of Odisha, one of the “Pañcha Sākhās” (Five Friends) of Odia Bhakti literature. His writings and devotion to Bhagwan Jagannath deeply shaped Odia spirituality and culture.
From childhood, he was spiritually inclined and deeply devoted to
Jagannath Dham. He was one of the five major devotional poets of Odisha: Balarama Dasa, Ananta Dasa, Achyutananda Dasa, Yasovanta Dasa, and Jagannatha Dasa. Together, they spread Bhakti movement ideals in Odia language. He is considered the Adi Kavi (great poet) of Odia Bhagavata literature.
According to Bhakti Bharat his greatest contribution is the Odia Bhagavata (also called Jagannatha Dasa’s Bhagavata), a translation and devotional rendering of the Sanskrit Bhagavata Purana. Jagannatha Dasa is remembered as both a great Odia saint and a messenger of Lord Jagannath’s love.
