Sister Nivedita was born in Dublin, Ireland, and met Swami Vivekananda at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. She was so impressed by his teachings that she decided to become a Hindu nun. She took the name Nivedita, which means "
Devoted to God." Nivedita returned to India in 1898 and began working with Swami Vivekananda to establish schools and hospitals for women. She also worked to improve the lives of the poor and the oppressed.
