Sant Tukaram was a revered Marathi saint, poet, and key figure of the Bhakti movement in western India. He is especially known for his devotional verses called abhangas, dedicated to Vithoba.

He is regarded as one of the greatest saints in Marathi literature. His poetry emphasized devotion, equality, compassion, and a direct relationship with God rather than ritualism. His works continue to be sung and studied across Maharashtra and beyond. He is a central figure in the Varkari tradition, whose followers make pilgrimages to Pandharpur.

A famous idea from Tukaram's teachings is that sincere devotion and ethical living are more important than social status or external religious practices.
